The product innovation KLAX from Alpha-Omega Technology makes the values of smart metering systems available immediately, for effective energy-saving measures

Berlin, 29 January 2019: As a leading provider of LoRaWAN products, Alpha-Omega Technology GmbH & Co. KG, together with its partners Zenner IoT Solutions GmbH and comtac AG, presents a technical solution that captures the values of the optical interfaces of smart metering systems and transmits them continuously. KLAX thus closes a gap in the market of currently available products. The reader helps to implement effective energy-saving measures. Alpha-Omega Technology will present KLAX to the public for the first time as a prototype in February at E-world and embedded world.

The demand for readers for the optical interfaces of smart meters via a Long Range Wide Area Network, LoRaWAN for short, is growing. The reason is the progress of smart meter rollouts in the German-speaking region and the simultaneous penetration of LoRaWAN technology, so the number of smart metering systems in use is growing continuously. The new smart electricity meters use optical interfaces to output the meter readings. To date, however, there has been no technical solution for capturing this data and evaluating it continuously. The IT companies Alpha-Omega Technology and ZENNER IoT Solutions are closing this gap with the product innovation KLAX, an attachment for the integrated optical interface that is simply fixed with a magnet. The values can thus be recorded via the pulses and used for additional services as required. The technical development was carried out by the hardware specialist comtac AG.

Readings are available immediately

The signals from the interface are picked up by the optical head and transmitted via LoRaWAN. The measured values are available in the back end shortly after measurement, unlike the readings provided by grid operators only once a day. This allows customers to monitor their energy consumption continuously every 15 minutes and to influence their current electricity consumption directly.

KLAX is based on the standardised SML protocol and therefore works in combination with various smart meter devices, making it compatible with most common meters. The product enables energy and water utilities as well as housing companies to offer value-added services based on the available readings.

So far, KLAX is in use as a prototype, but the manufacturer will supply the first energy utilities with KLAX in the course of the first quarter of 2019. In Germany and Austria, the product innovation is available via iot-shop.de.

Invitation to interviews and background talks at embedded world Media representatives are cordially invited to have KLAX demonstrated and explained in person by Alpha-Omega Technology at embedded world in Hall 3, stand 3-733.
