A

ABP

Authentication By Personalization, an activation procedure in LoRaWAN, key information is exchanged in advance between the server and the sensor via a different channel.

AES

Advanced Encryption Standard

AppEUI

Application EUI

AppNonce

AppNonce is a counter number generated by the network server

B

Backhaul

Connection of a LoRaWAN gateway to the LoRaWAN network server to forward the packets. This connection must have a correspondingly low latency to enable downlink communication for class A devices. Possible protocols are: 3G, 4G, Ethernet, DOCSis

Basic Station

A software to forward LoRa packets (Packet Forwarder) to a LoRaWAN network server (LNS) via encrypted websocket protocol (wss) (and back). Additionally, a central configuration and firmware update via CUPS protocol is included. More to Basic Station >>

D

Datacake

DevAddr

The DevAddr is a 32-bit identifier of the end device in the current network. The 7 MSBs of DevAddr are called NwkID, which is also included in NetID. The other bits can be chosen arbitrarily by the network server.

DevEUI

Device EUI

Duty Cycle

Describes the time period during which a sensor transmits data as a ratio of time units. This period is regulated by authorities and is 1.00% (1 in 100 time units) for LoRaWan in most areas.

G

Gateway

Component of a LoRaWAN network that collects data packets from IoT devices and forwards them to a LoRaWAN network server (LNS).

L

LNS

LoRaWAN Network Server - central software component of a LoRaWAN network. It manages the network status and the status of the IoT devices (Devices). Also receives data from the gateways and deduplicates it if it was received via multiple gateways. Queued data sent by the application server is managed and forwarded to a gateway for delivery to the IoT devices at the next possible IoT device receive time window..

LoRa Alliance

The LoRa Alliance is a non-profit association of more than 500 member companies that promotes the large-scale deployment of the LoRaWAN open standard..

LoRaWAN

Long Range Wide Area Network is a network protocol that enables communication from a sensor to a gateway over long distances.

LPWAN

Low Power Wide Area Network describes a class of network protocols (ebs. LoRaWAN or SigFox) that connects low power devices. More about LPWAN >>

N

NetID

NetID is a 24-bit field, its 5 LSBs are called NwkID, which is used to separate addresses of geographically duplicated LoRa networks. The other bits of the NetID can be freely determined by the network server.

O

OTAA

Over The Air Activation, an activation procedure in LoRaWAN, keys are generated when the sensor is first registered and exchanged asynchronously.
